Sustainable Development Goals

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) mark the start of the widest ever concerted global effort to transform our world by 2030.

The SDGs take a holistic and multifaceted approach, interweaving health considerations into all of the goals. Our industry welcomes this approach and confirms its commitment to achieving the SDGs and in so doing, contribute to inclusive, equitable, economically productive, and healthy societies.

Recognizing the interdependence of health and development, the SDGs provide an ambitious, comprehensive plan of action for people, planet, and prosperity and for ending the injustices that underpin poor health and development outcomes.

Promoting health and well-being is one of 17 Global Goals that make up the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. SDG #3 – the health goal – aspires to ensure health and well-being for all, including a bold commitment to end the epidemics of AIDS, tuberculosis, malaria and other communicable diseases by 2030. It also aims to achieve universal health coverage (UCH), and to provide access to safe and effective medicines and vaccines for all. Supporting research and development for vaccines is an essential part of this process as well as expanding access to affordable medicines.

Our industry considers all relevant stakeholders, including academia, civil society, and the private sector, as being integral to implementation of the SDGs. Multiple sectors need to continue to join forces to strengthen healthcare systems, identify sustainable financing mechanisms, and reduce the add-on costs of health products and services along the supply chain. Partnerships in the health sector should be further encouraged and developed while the global health community moves along the road to 2030. Our industry is currently involved in over 300 health partnerships. These bring together different actors to improve the lives of people suffering from diseases such as HIV/AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis, non-communicable diseases (NCDs) and neglected tropical diseases (NTDs), as well as cross-cutting challenges like women and children’s health.

Sitting at the core of Goal #3 is the powerful concept of Universal Health Coverage (UHC), which our industry supports. Fulfilling UHC requires investing in health systems strengthening, including resilience to health emergencies, provision of integrated care and services, and a focus on prevention of chronic and injury-related conditions.
