During the 71st World Health Assembly, join the World Medical Association, the International Federation of Red Cross Red Crescent Societies and the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Manufacturers and Associations in their event to mark the centenary of the deadly 1918 influenza pandemic. An expert panel will raise the issue of the ever-present threat of an influenza pandemic to global health security:

Are we prepared for another pandemic?
What are the lessons learned?
How can global health stakeholders avert another deadly influenza pandemic?

This event will be featuring an in-depth panel discussion with flu experts, leaders from biopharmaceutical industry, health professionals and governmental leaders.

Claire Doole is a former BBC journalist and international spokeswoman who is passionate about helping people communicate with confidence.

Since 2006, she has successfully trained hundreds of professionals in the art of presenting and public speaking, talking to the media, managing communications in a crisis, moderating panel discussions and effective writing. In addition, she has coached C-level executives and public figures to give powerful TEDx and TED style talks in Europe and the Middle East. In her training and coaching, Claire is committed to helping her clients gain powerful communication skills.

Claire is also an accomplished content creator. She has produced hundreds of videos and video interviews for websites, social media platforms, events and conferences. She has written numerous articles for international organisations and her blogs appear on several Geneva and Brussels-based media outlets.

Dr Marie Mazur

Vice President, Global Commercial Development and Policy, Seqirus

Marie Mazur has been with CSL for 10 years. Based in King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, she spearheaded the introduction of CSL’s seasonal influenza vaccine in the United States in 2007. She currently leads the Global Commercial Development and Policy team for Seqirus, a CSL Company focusing on influenza.
With extensive research and production expertise and manufacturing plants in the US, UK, Germany and Australia, Seqirus is a transcontinental partner in pandemic preparedness and a major contributor to the prevention and control of influenza globally. Seqirus has a workforce of over 2,000 employees, significant manufacturing capacity, a commercial presence in twenty countries and product and geographic diversity.
Prior to joining CSL, Marie held successive global commercial leadership positions at Sanofi Pasteur, 3M Pharmaceuticals and GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals.
Marie holds a Pharm. D, a Masters in Health Regulations from Paris University and is a graduate from INSEAD.

Dr Ardis Hoven

Ardis Dee Hoven, MD, an internal medicine and infectious disease specialist in Lexington, Ky., was president of the American Medical Association from June 2013 to June 2014.
Dr. Hoven has been a member of the AMA Board of Trustees (BOT) since 2005, serving as its secretary for 2008–2009, chair for 2010–2011, and immediate past chair from 2011 to 2012.
Prior to her election to the AMA-BOT, Dr. Hoven served as a member and chair of the AMA Council on Medical Service. She was a member of the Utilization Review and Accreditation Commission for six years and served on its executive committee. Additional activities have included service on the AMA Foundation board of directors, the Group Practice Advisory Council of the AMA, the AMA-convened Physician Consortium for Performance Improvement®, the COLA board of directors, the National Advisory Council for Healthcare Research and Quality, as well as an appointment to the Practicing Physicians Advisory Commission. Currently Dr. Hoven serves as the AMA-BOT representative on the Board of Directors of the National Quality Forum, the Quality Alliance Steering Committee, and is the chair of the AMA delegation to the World Medical Association.

Thomas Cueni

Thomas B. Cueni is Director General of IFPMA since 1 February 2017. Prior to joining IFPMA he was Secretary General of Interpharma, the association of pharmaceutical research companies in Switzerland. For many years Thomas Cueni has been involved in the work of the European Federation of Pharmaceutical Industries and Associations, EFPIA, where he most recently served as Vice-Chair of the European Markets Committee and association representative on the Board. He represented the industry on the EU High Level Pharmaceutical Forum, was Chairman of EFPIA’s Economic and Social Policy Committee and Chairman of the EFPIA Task Force on the EU Commission’s Pharmaceutical Sector Inquiry. Thomas Cueni also represented Interpharma, which he successfully transformed from the association of Swiss Rx companies to the association of pharmaceutical research companies in Switzerland, on the Council of IFPMA.
Prior to his appointment with Interpharma, Thomas Cueni had a career as a journalist, inter alia as London correspondent for the “Basler Zeitung” and “Der Bund”, and he served as a Swiss career diplomat with postings in Paris (OECD) and Vienna (IAEA, UNIDO). He studied at the University of Basle, the London School of Economics, and the Geneva Graduate Institute for International Studies, and has Master degrees in economics (University of Basel) and politics (London School of Economics, LSE).

Axel Azar

US Secretary of Health and Human Services

Alex Azar was sworn in as the Secretary of Health and Human Services on Jan. 29, 2018. Azar has spent his career working in both the public and private sectors, as an attorney and in senior leadership roles focused on advancing healthcare reform, research and innovation.
From 2001 to 2007, Azar served at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services – first as its General Counsel (2001–2005) and then as Deputy Secretary. During his time as Deputy Secretary, Azar was involved in improving the department’s operations; advancing its emergency preparedness and response capabilities as well as its global health affairs activities; and helping oversee the rollout of the Medicare Part D prescription drug program.
In 2007, Azar rejoined the private sector as senior vice president for corporate affairs and communications at Eli Lilly and Co. From 2012 to 2017, he served as president of Lilly USA LLC, the company’s largest affiliate.
Azar graduated summa cum laude with a bachelor’s degree in economics and government from Dartmouth College and earned his law degree from Yale University

Dr Sylvie Briand

Dr Sylvie Briand

Director, Infectious Hazards Management, WHO

Dr Briand is currently Director of the Infectious Hazard Management (IHM) - Pandemic and Epidemic Diseases department (PED) in WHO Health Emergency Programme (WHE) at the World Health Organisation in Geneva.
She was head of the Global Influenza Programme (GIP) during the H1N1 2009 pandemic. She joined WHO in 2001 initially working as a medical officer in the Global Task Force on Cholera Control. Then, from 2004 to June 2007, she has been leading the Yellow Fever (YF) Programme including the management of the global Yellow Fever vaccine stockpile for emergency and the Yellow Fever Initiative funded by the GAVI Alliance.
Her working experience in WHO has mainly been oriented towards alert and response to epidemic prone disease including deadly viral haemorrhagic fevers such as Ebola Marburg disease.

Before working at WHO, Dr Briand led various projects on health sector reform for Development Banks, European Commission and bilateral cooperation agencies. Previous to this experience, she spent 4 years in South America as director of PROCED, a regional project funded by the European Commission to support Andean countries in controlling the re-emergence of cholera outbreaks. Dr Briand holds a medical doctor degree, a master in Public health and a PhD (Epidemiology/Health Systems analysis).

Mr. Sy has extensive experience in leadership roles in the humanitarian sector, having
previously served at a senior level with UNICEF, UNAIDS, the Global Fund to Fight AIDS,
Tuberculosis and Malaria, and other agencies for more than 25 years.
Before joining the IFRC ‐ the world’s largest humanitarian network ‐ Mr. Sy was UNICEF’s
Director of Partnerships and Resource Development in New York. He has also served as
UNICEF Regional Director for Eastern and Southern Africa and Global Emergency
Coordinator for the Horn of Africa.
From 2005 to 2008, Mr. Sy was Director, HIV/AIDS Practice with the United Nations
Development Programme in New York. Before that, he worked with the Global Fund to Fight
AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria as its Africa Regional Director and later as Director of
Operational Partnerships and Country Support in Geneva. Mr. Sy has also held the position
of UNAIDS Representative in New York and Director of the New York Liaison Office.
From 1988 to 1997, he served as Director of Health and Development Programmes with
Environment and Development Action in the Third World in Dakar, Senegal.
Mr. Sy holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Arts and Human Sciences from the University of Dakar.
He then pursued Master’s studies in Arts and Germanistik at the University of Graz, and
graduated from the Diplomatic Academy in Vienna. He was also awarded a post graduate
diploma in Education from the Ecole normale superieure in Dakar . He speaks English,
French and German and is a national of Senegal.
